100% silk charmeuse dyed with cochineal. Cochineal is a bug that grows on the prickly pear cacti and produces deep red and magenta hues. It has been used for centuries as a coloring agent in foods and lipstick. Cochineal is the only natural dye we do not grow or forage locally. The cochineal we use is sourced directly from a 5 family farming co-op in Peru who grows the Nopal, also known as prickly pear cacti, and harvests the little critters. We purchase the bugs dry and then process into dye.
